Understanding Benchmark Metrics in Almanac

Learn how to compare store performance using Place Growth, Benchmark Growth, and Performance Gap

Note: This article refers to the Almanac 2.0 benchmark metrics experience. This new design and navigation is currently available in the Places section only, but will be rolled out across the product in the coming months.

What Are Benchmark Metrics?

Benchmark metrics in Almanac help you evaluate how a store is performing both over time and relative to a peer group. These comparisons give retail teams a clear view of whether a store is keeping up with, exceeding, or lagging behind the broader market.

Where to Find Them

You can access benchmark metrics in the Places section of Almanac. When you open a store view, you’ll see up to three metric cards:

  • Place Growth – How the selected store is performing over time (e.g., year-on-year).
  • Benchmark Growth – The average performance of the selected comparison group.
  • Performance Gap – The difference between the above two, showing how far ahead or behind the store is compared to the benchmark.

Default Behavior and Comparison Logic

  • Place Growth appears by default when a time comparison (like year-on-year) is selected. If the time comparison is removed, this card will disappear.
  • Benchmark Growth and Performance Gap appear only if a benchmark has already been selected (e.g., in the Dashboard), or added manually in the Places view.

Note: If you choose Market Spend Trends as your comparison, Benchmark Growth will display, but Performance Gap will not. That's because spend and foot traffic are separate data sets and shouldn’t be compared directly.

How to Add a Comparison

To enable benchmark comparisons:

  1. Click Add Comparison in the top bar of the Places view.
  2. Choose from the following comparison options in the drawer:
    • Competitive Set – A selection of similar stores.
    • Market Spend Trends – A premium feature showing market-wide sales trends.
    • Center – Compare with all stores in the same retail complex or mall.
    • Specific Store – Search for another retailer by name. Results are shown by proximity within a 15-mile radius.

Tip: If you don’t see the store you're looking for, it may be outside the 15-mile radius currently supported.

Interpreting the Metrics

Each card provides a distinct view of store performance:

  • Place Growth and Benchmark Growth are shown as percentages.
  • Performance Gap is shown as percentage points, clearly indicating the difference between the store’s performance and the benchmark.

Example Use Case

Let’s say you’re reviewing performance for an ALDO store at The Plaza At Mall of Georgia. You compare it year-on-year and add a nearby competitive set as a benchmark.

  • Place Growth shows -3%, indicating a decline in store performance.
  • Benchmark Growth shows +3.87%, meaning similar stores are growing.
  • Performance Gap is -6.87, which signals that this ALDO location is significantly underperforming its peers.

With this quick read, you now have insight into both absolute and relative performance — a valuable tool for prioritizing field team actions or preparing for leadership discussions.
